Dear Reader,
One of the hardest things in life…is picking an interesting topic for a
research project. Eventually after a long time of thinking I was able to choose
a topic that I was willing to study. I decided on the subject of kidnapping
because it is thrilling and one never knows what to expect. Kidnappings hold
many dark secrets, and it is entertaining to read about someone overcoming the
obstacles on their path. The research performed was based on the research
question, what effect does being kidnapped have on an individual? To my surprise
my research led me to discover things I had never thought about before.
Before my research I knew a few obvious facts relating to my topic. One
fact I knew was that kidnappings differentiate for every victim. Prior to my
exploration I thought that if a victim was released their life would just
automatically go back to ‘normal’. In my mind I saw a person being welcomed
home, and their comeback being easy. This is something that I believed I knew,
but after my investigation it was proven false. I never thought about all of the
challenges they would have to surpass. After reading, Den
of Lions & Even Silence has an End, my viewpoint of kidnapped victims
changed.
The only way for one to discover new ideas while researching is to have a
good question to use as a guide. Setting up a research question is something
that should be done very carefully. One must pick a question that they will be
able to handle for the duration of the research. I personally tried to choose
questions that would keep my mind busy, and help me on my path to having a
successful research project. My research question developed after I read my
first book, Den of Lions. (Never rush a research question it comes with time) While reading this book I
questioned how could someone live through all of this? Once completing my book I
was able to decide that on researching the effects kidnappings leave on
surviving individuals. Personally this was a good research question because it
contained ample amount of evidence, and it was something that would keep my mind
occupied at all times. The important thing to remember when picking a question
is; what one will be able to focus on throughout the entire
investigation?
After I had decided on my question I started looking for information.
There are many places that one can go to seek evidence supporting their
research. I started with reading books about my topic. There were two books that
I read. The first being, Den of lions,
and the second being, Even
Silence has an End. These two
books were autobiographies and they showed kidnapped victims personal
experiences throughout their captivity, and challenges after their release. Once
I had finished reading, picked out specific events that victims suffer from, I
was able to further my research. Some of the places that I went to advance my
study were Proquest an online database, and google which led me to websites that
focused on my subject. That is how my personal research process went, but
everyone will differ.
During my research I discovered many new ideas that answered my question.
In my paper I talked about all of the new things I unburied. The things that are
reflected in my paper relate to what victims face after their release. One thing
that was new to me was Stockholm syndrome. This is a syndrome that most
kidnapped victims are faced with. It is something that is different in every
case, but mostly it is where the victim is still dependent of their abductor.
They also have problems with regaining trust, and the ability to feel safe. The
books also supported what I predicted prior to my research. It proved that every
kidnapped case is different. Learning new things about kidnappings showed me
what other people face, and it showed me how to value and appreciate what I have
in my life.
Never let the assignment of a RESEARCH PROJECT scare you. Really they
aren’t that bad. There are many
plus sides to these projects. They teach you new things. My topic was
kidnapping, and I was able to learn things from it. I was able to see how hard
others’ life may be, and what I should value in my life. Even though there are
plus sides there are also negatives. Some bad things about this project were the
size. It consumed a lot of time, but if one is smart enough to set deadlines it
makes it easier and less stressful. As a whole this project was definitely worth
the time it took. It revealed to me that I am very fortunate to have what I have
in my life, and there are others out there who aren’t as lucky. If I had to do
another research project I would pick the same
subject.
If I was to do this project again I wouldn’t change much. The teacher did
everything right, and I wouldn’t change anything she set up for us. The only
thing that I could see room for improvement was on my part. I would set more
personal goals/deadlines for myself. Managing your time is a major part of this
assignment, and without organization one will fail. Another idea for improvement
would be having more class days dedicated to peer editing. This project overall
was successful, and there isn’t much to
change.
SO WHAT!!!!! Why should one keep reading? This topic is something that
will keep your mind busy and you always waiting to see what will happen next. It
is thrilling and exciting. Kidnappings are something that not all people will go
through so it makes the subject interesting to study.
This research is basically like one big mystery waiting to be uncovered.
I feel that this project required a lot of effort, and deserves to be
looked at. There is very valuable information located on this weebly page. If
one is searching for U.S. overall kidnapping statistics the infographic is a
quick visual. The essay is a detailed report about the effects a kidnapping has
on an individual. If one is looking for sources that I went to for more
information on kidnappings they can look at the annotated bib. This is a website
about the effects of kidnappings on an individual. I hope you as a reader find
this topic as interesting as I did. Thank you for your time, and I hope your
research goes as well as mine did.
Sincerely,
Elaina Bailey
